Photo Tips

by Ann Scaling Tucker

-One of the most basic tips is to "Hold the camera steady". If you can't prop your arm or hand on something to help you. Also be sure your finger or thumb is not in the picture.

-Always be sure the sun is behind you. This should be easy to remember since when you are facing the sun you can hardly see your object.

-Use variety in pictures so they don't look the same, like shooting in different types of weather, pick different background scenes, include people or don't include people. Include something that shows where you were or who you were with like a sign or name on a building.

-Get on the same level as the object you are filming, like when taking pictures of babies, young children, seated individuals or animals.

-Try to have a plain background behind your subject. A busy background will make your subject look like they are in the middle of a mess. If you photograph a person in a room with lots of knick knacks or furniture they can tend to get lost in the picture.

-You can use flash outdoors and the camera will adjust when you shoot. Sometimes you can do without a flash in side and get more of the ambiance of what you are shooting.

-Move in close to your subject and get several shots at different angles. If its a person take shots with different expressions.

-Occasionally take some vertical pictures or tilt the camera for a slight angle. Don't have all your pictures the same flat shot. Get some warmth and humor in your photos.

-Pick your subject and move it just a little from the center of the picture. Your picture will have more character if it is a little off center.

-Try to put your subject in a frame of some sort. A person can rest their head on something or look through something. An animal can be shot in front of a box or window. Even if it is a partial frame it will make your picture have more interest.

-Pick an interesting subject or something different. A vintage object next to a beautiful flower for instance, or have a person stand in front of an old building or an unusual shaped object.

Make your photographs the ones that everyone want to look at. Make them different or unusual. They will be make a beautiful scrapbook, photo album or framed picture.
