Examples of Onomatopoeia

by Zoinkies Staff

Onomatopoeia is the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g., cuckoo, sizzle). However the word Onomatopoeia can also be used to describe the use of such words for rhetorical effect. For example, in the sentence 'The poet Tennyson used onomatopoeia as a linguistic device'

A person can find many examples of onomatopoeia in animal sounds. One of the most common is a dog's barking: woof. There is also meow, (the sound imitating a cat), moo, moo, (the sound of a cow), and oink, (the sound of a pig). A longer example of animal-based onomatopoeia is cock-a-doodle-doo, the sound associated with roosters crowing in the morning.

worsleyschool.net listed some great examples:

'Listen to the bee buzz by'.
'Click the button and take a picture'.
'Listen to the fire crackle in the dark' .
'Don't forget to flush the toilet'.
'A long kiss is something you won't forget'.
'The bar is a ratchet in the machine'.
'Dave whooshed down the hill'.

* Rice Krispies - "Snap, crackle, pop" when you pour on milk.
* Alka-Seltzer - makes a "plop, plop, fizz, fizz" noise when dunked in water.
* Cocoa Puffs - a wacky bird is "cuckoo" for them.
